My Favourite Photographers

I have loved art ever since I was younger and when it was time to pick options for GCSE's I knew art had to be one of those options, same again when it came to choosing my A-Levels. Turns out sixth form wasn't for me and neither was A-Level art, there was no freedom to it. So I went to college instead and did a UAL Art & Design course. This was one of the best decisions I've made, we had so much freedom on what work we wanted to create, what media to use and we study things that interested US!

This is when I started to be able to follow my love and appreciation for photography and see that it can be classed as fine art too. I could also now work in the style of my favourite photographers if I studied them.

Now studying FCP at uni obviously photography is a massive part of the FCP process and many jobs in fashion are in the photography field. I wanted to share a few of my favourite photographers. Some of them I've been aware of for years and some from more recent projects; all using an array of either film or digital to really get some unique and beautiful images.

Enjoy!

Terry Richardson

I've been aware of Richardson and his work ever since the work he did for Supreme and their box logo shirts and then the shoot with Miley Cyrus in late 2015.

I love that the prevalent theme that runs through his photography is 'NSFW'. Celebrities like Lindsay Lohan, Gaga and Miley can be seen in raunchy sexy poses next to the photographer. Although these celebrities are known for being controversial I love how the shoot is planned and it's not just them sticking their tongue out at paparazzi or something.

The high quality and bright contrast using lighting makes the models look intense and uninhibited. The plain harsh white background perfectly works with the warm tones of the skin and the colour palettes of the outfits worn in the shoot, normally black, white and reds.

Emily Bowler

I became aware of London teenager, Emily Bowler's photography when I was watching a documentary on VICE about Lil Peep. She had done some photography of him when he came to live in London.

Peep was a rapper who had just started to make it big in the world, everyone knew he was troubled through his music and he made it known that he had a drug problem too. He sadly died of a fentanyl overdose in November 2017.

Her film camera work astounds me. Not only are the subjects she photographs so interesting but the lighting, the colours in the images and how she captures the face make it so much more beautiful.

Documentary photography is a personal favourite of mine. It captures humans doing what they do best, being human. You can tell a lot about a person from this style. The things they are wearing, their expression on their faces and what they are doing and I think Bowler does this so beautifully!

Sarah Bahbah

I discovered Sarah Bahbah's work when I was doing my FMP for college last year. I fell in love instantaneously. Her photography gives me euphoric vibes and the little quotes at the bottom of the images are sometimes so relatable. It's like she wanted every teenage girl to relate to her work as much as possible by using beautiful models and relatable quotes.

The colour palettes she uses are so beautiful and concise too.

A lot of people like singers have tried to rip off her work in their music videos. There is a sense of compliment when someone tries to copy your work but it must be infuriating for her!

I think the little quotes at the bottom of the images really get you thinking about the story behind the image more. We have been given more context to the image so we can create more of a story in our own heads as the viewer now!
