COVID Vogue: Discussed

COVID19 will probably be the most discussed topic of the year without a doubt, June saw the first issues of Vogue around the world that would be released whilst the pandemic is around. Here are my first initial opinions about some of the covers that have been put out.

Vogue US:
I was really quite surprised that this was the cover for US Vogue as I find their covers quite boring and always conform with the norms.
This is such a beautiful, simple cover. Creative director, Raul Martinez wanted to use a single red rose as a sign of beauty, hope and reawakening. With no opportunity to do photoshoots they needed to transform across a message without imagery and just use imagery that can be created by the mind.
By not putting much text at all and keeping to a simple 3 colours the front cover looks effortless and just focusses on what really matters this month.
The small amount of text on the cover, which shows that inside will be a piece on how to be creative in a time of crisis, is so useful right now. Myself, and so many people I know are unable to find our imaginations and creative flow as easily as we could when we could be immersed physically into the arts every day.
By this issue of Vogue not making everything about fashion, in a time where fashion isn't massively on people's minds, is really great and really shows they are being culturally aware. It is caring and like he rest of the world they are moving with the fact that 'business is not as usual."

Vogue Paris:
I'm not as impressed by France's rendition of the June COVID issue. I tried to delve into some information about how the front cover was directed and what their reasonings for doing it were but there wasn't' much to tell me and certainly nothing to do with solidarity in the pandemic. The whole issue was about 'dreaming'. I mean apart from dreaming about what life will be like after COVID19 not much dreaming is taking place. I think it's quite insensitive to just carry on the issue as normal.

Vogue Italia
Vogue Italia was the first issue of June Vogue to be released to the media. in January when Coronavirus became apparent throughout the world Vogue Italia decided to refrain from using photography, to be more sustainable.
We all know white connotes a message of surrender. But also means rebirth, respect, silence and purity. This is something we need in such a devastating time like this, to pay respect to all the lives across the world hat have been lost, to respect the people that are putting their lives on the line everyday.
The aim for brands and companies to try and be so positive in a time like this is very hard, when the state of the world and business is changing,. What will everything be like when we finally say goodbye to COVID19 ?
This front cover shows a fresh start for so many industries that Vogue works with. A fresh start for the world. It has me wondering what kind of approach they will take when it is all over and we can finally get back to normality. I'm sure they will take great caution with their approach as they have here.

British Vogue:
Here is British Vogue's June 2020 edition with the beautiful Judi Dench on, this is the cover that marks Judi being the oldest cover star Vogue has ever seen.
I think during a time like this where in the UK COVID19 is attacking our elderly so viciously and attacked so many care-homes it was beautiful and timely for British Vogue to use Dame Judi on their front cover.
Her quote on the front cover is so true, we are seeing so much kindness come from peoples hearts which is helping this horrible time that little bit easier.
I, like Judi, would love to see the world remain this way when COVID19 is over.
