BLM & the fashion world

After nearly a week now of the world feeling like it is up in flames (and quite literally in some places in America) the fight for black lives to be equal to white lives is more relevant that ever. People are taking more action against it and it does feel like a lot of the world is coming together to unite and fight.

Signing petitions, attending protests, donating money to families and bail bills, writing to MP’s, calling out our disgusting British History and educating ourselves and correcting our own and others behaviour are just some of the things we can do in Britain.

Bringing the issue into fashion is just as important as it is in any sector, black propel have took this time to call our their employees or brands that they’ve worked with who have treated them unfairly. Jokes than can mean to come off lighthearted but have a racist intent, not having the same opportunities as white skinned people in the companies. In this time of solidarity and time of reflection they have felt it time to come out and make others in similar situations not feel as alone.

As a white woman these things shocked me. And I was quite naive to think that these things didn’t happen in the work place anymore. Brands such as EverPress have been called out. A brand who I presumed would be about inclusivity a lot more than they have proved to be.

Of course we had the usual rubbish from fast fashion brands like Oh Polly Who couldn’t even be bothered to use black people in the campaign for their T-shirt’s that profits would be donated to BLM causes. Oh Polly have been caught out in the past not even using black models on their social media pages. They made an account called ‘Oh Polly’ inclusive, a page where black girls would be featured, not on the main page.

This awful time has been so eye opening for me. As a girl who is a die hard Labour supporter and someone who is so passionate about humans rights and just general current affairs in our world I was definitely uneducated on a lot of these subjects. I have taken this time to help the fight, to educated myself and my family as best I can and to support the movement.

Here is a link to a link of some petitions you can sign. Make sure to confirm your email otherwise the signature does NOT count.

Thanks :)
